Carbomer
The Gel Architect & Texture Provider

What is Carbomer? Carbomer is not a single substance, but a group of synthetic polymers based on acrylic acid. In cosmetics, it is the standard for creating crystal-clear, water-based gels. It is not an active ingredient itself, but crucial for the "feel" of a product on the skin.
✨ Texture & Stability
The main task of Carbomer is to control consistency (viscosity).
- Gel Formation: It turns water into a firm, spreadable gel in seconds – ideal for light facial gels or aloe vera products.
- Stabilizer: In creams and lotions, it prevents oil and water phases from separating, keeping emulsions stable in the long term.
- Skin Feel: It allows for very light, non-sticky textures that have a pleasant cooling "water-break" effect upon application.
⚠ What you should watch out for
The pH Trick: Carbomer as a raw material is acidic and powdery. It only forms a clear gel when dissolved in water and neutralized with a base (such as Triethanolamine or sodium hydroxide solution) to adjust the pH value. It is considered safe and non-irritating because the molecules are too large to penetrate the skin.
