Potassium Sorbate
The Mold Fighter & Food Friendly Preservative

What is Potassium Sorbate? Behind this name lies the potassium salt of sorbic acid. Originally, sorbic acid was discovered in the unripe berries of the rowan tree, but today the substance is synthesized nature-identically. Potassium sorbate is one of the most widely used preservatives worldwide – not only in cosmetics but also in food (E202). It is particularly gentle on the skin and considered very safe.
🥀 Protection against Fungi & Yeasts
The absolute strength of potassium sorbate lies in its specific action against "fuzzy enemies."
- Anti-Fungal: It effectively prevents the growth of molds that would quickly spoil creams and lotions.
- Yeast Stop: It acts strongly against yeasts (Candida), which could trigger fermentation processes in water-containing products.
- The Partner: Since it is rather weak against bacteria, it is almost always combined with other preservatives (like Sodium Benzoate) to provide all-around protection.
🌿 Mild & Well-Tolerated
Why is it so popular? Because it has hardly any side effects.
Benefits for formulation:
- Food Grade: What is safe to eat is usually safe for the skin. It has excellent mucous membrane compatibility.
- Odorless and Tasteless: It does not alter the scent of your cosmetics.
- Water Soluble: It is very easy to incorporate into the water phase of products.
⚠ What you should watch out for
The pH value is crucial: Potassium sorbate is only effective in an acidic environment. For it to become active, the pH value of the product must be below 5.5 (even better below 5.0). It is ineffective in alkaline products (like solid soap).
