What is Sorbic Acid? Sorbic acid is a mild preservative originally discovered in the unripe berries of the rowan tree (mountain ash). Today, it is mostly produced nature-identically. It is also approved as a food additive (E200) and very popular in natural cosmetics.

🥀 Specialist against Fungi

The strength of sorbic acid lies not in fighting bacteria, but against other germs.

  • Anti-Fungal: It is extremely effective at preventing the growth of molds and yeasts that would quickly spoil creams.
  • Team Player: Since it is rather weak against bacteria, it is almost always combined with other mild preservatives to provide all-around protection.

⚠ What you should watch out for

The pH value is crucial: Sorbic acid only works in an acidic environment. For it to be actively effective, the pH value of the product must mandatory be below 5.5 (even better below 5.0). It is ineffective in neutral or alkaline products. It is considered very skin-compatible.
