Limonene
The Citrus Booster & Mood Lifter

What is Limonene? When you peel an orange and that zesty scent hits your nose, you are smelling Limonene. It is a natural terpene found in high concentrations in the peels of citrus fruits. In cosmetics, it is loved not only for its fresh aroma but also as a functional ingredient that cleanses and dissolves.
🍋 Scent & Effect
Limonene is primarily a fragrance, but it also has biochemical effects on the skin and the product.
- Mood Booster: The scent has been proven to be mood-lifting, stress-relieving, and activating.
- Solvent: It has enormous grease-dissolving power. In cleansing products, it helps to effectively remove sebum and oily residues.
- Penetration Helper: It can temporarily make the skin barrier more permeable, allowing other active ingredients to penetrate deeper.
🧺 Natural vs. Synthetic
There are two forms (isomers) of this substance.
The variants:
- D-Limonene: The natural form that smells of orange and lemon (main component in essential oils).
- L-Limonene: Smells more resinous, like turpentine or pine (found in coniferous trees).
- In Hago products, you will predominantly find the naturally occurring D-Limonene from plant extracts.
⚠ What you should watch out for
Declaration & Allergies: Limonene is one of the 26 fragrance allergens that must be declared, as it can trigger contact allergies in sensitive individuals. Important to know: Pure Limonene is rarely the problem. Allergies are usually caused by oxidized Limonene (when the oil gets old). Therefore, always store products with citrus scents in a cool and dark place!
